THE NEW AGE SUSTAINABLE NEIGHBOORHOOD
A Love Uprising
Our current food model is unsustainable. Our dependence on one region of the country to provide our produce will cripple our economy as food becomes too expensive. The by-product of our shift to chemically grown foods is evident in the High-Fructose generation. The limited health this current food model provides is obvious in the rise in obesity and Diabetes.
Local Food Production is a vital component of a sustainable community. With the food price increases of 2008, we are poised to face even greater inflation due to our dependence on California for the majority of our produce. With a continuing severe drought, California is planning on limiting water for farmers in March 2009. These conditions coupled with rising fuel costs can only mean rising food prices.
Inside our urban areas, the potential to develop undeveloped lots into farms is immense. In North East Denver, the old Dahlia Square Shopping Center has lain undeveloped for several years. This area can be transformed in 2009 to a farm and a farmer’s market that takes food stamps.
A truly self sufficient community provides from within for all its needs. The definition of self-sufficient for this mission concerns basic human needs of shelter, clothing, and food. The rest are just blessings of abundance we must recognize that are finite unless we respect them.
40 Acres and a Muse is an initiative to transform vacant urban lots into organic farms and open air markets. Farmers will be recruited from the neighborhood, and offered a living wage and access to benefits. The benefits for the community from job creation and healthier lifestyles will be visible in short time.
40 Acres and a Muse is a food production plan. 40 jobs paying a sustainable wage of $40,000, or $19.23 wages, created in the food production industry will generate $1.6 million in income in lower income neighborhoods. These jobs will range from farmer, produce grocer and preparer, market retail, transportation, and chef.
All 40 positions will have a labor skill component to their duties. All 40 workers will each be a steward of 40 vacant lots which can be developed. Manual labor and exercise is a vital component to a healthy life and balance with mind and earth. We have so much abundance; we just forgot we have to work for it.
On vacant undeveloped lots in the community, 40Acres and a Muse will sow seeds to feed the community body food grown with love. 40 Acres and a Muse is an initiative to transform vacant urban lots into organic farms and open air markets. Farmers will be recruited from the neighborhood, and offered a living wage and access to benefits. In the Farmer’s Market, Love Uprising will create artistic space for poets, musicians, and crafts people to raise the food that feeds the soul.
A culturally rich neighborhood is the melting pot of America where peoples of infinite diverse backgrounds unify into of a community of respect and acceptances of ones difference because at the end of the day we’re all neighbors on Earth.
A neighborhood needs to remember how to support itself. We have lost this basic skill to take care of our basic needs. In China , 20 million jobs have been lost due to the slow down in our economy. As these young people return back to their villages, they don’t know if they can farm to survive. The work is too hard. This is a troublesome thought as we all are being shown we need to get back to our roots: a self sustaining human being.
Our Love Uprising farm will exchange cross cultural learning’s through an exchange program with ecoparaiso.org.br. As we visit other country’s we can learn and share and appreciate the sameness between people. The lesson learned and experienced will bring great rewards for both communities.
With knowledge leaving the planet with our elders, we still have time to learn how to farm. The labor is hard and arduous, but the importance immeasurable.
Love Uprising will grow and process organic food for sale at farmer’s markets. Partnerships with local organic farms will be sought where we can buy produce at either picking or processing stage. This will allow us to add value to the produce and inspect for quality. Locals will be asked to come sell their garden vegetables, and if interested turn their yard into a spin farm. This is a community farm and market.
“There seem to be but three ways for a nation to acquire wealth. The first
is by war, as the Romans did, in plundering their conquered neighbors. This
is robbery. The second by commerce, which is generally cheating. The third
by agriculture, the only honest way, wherein man receives a real increase
of the seed thrown into the ground, in a kind of continual miracle…as a
reward for his innocent life and his virtuous industry.”
